Dr. Patrick Smylie is a Senior Lecturer in History at the University of Westminster, where he has taught since 2011. He serves as Course Leader for the BA History Degree, focusing on 20th-century Irish, British, and US history. His research explores Irish communism, Cold War dynamics, urban history (particularly Belfast), and political organizations in Ireland and Britain.
Education: BA Modern History (University of Westminster, 2003–06), MA Irish History (Queen's University, 2007), PhD (Queen's University, 2010).
Research Interests: Irish communism from New Unionism to the Cold War's end, Belfast's urban history during the Troubles, and the impact of civil disobedience in Ireland. Current projects include a book on sectarian suburbs and housing policy in Belfast.
Publications include edited volumes on Irish left-wing figures and peer-reviewed articles on Cold War Belfast and Irish political organizations. He is affiliated with the History Research Group.
