Dr. Patrick Rysiew is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Philosophy at the University of Victoria, Faculty of Humanities. He joined the department in 2006. His research focuses on epistemology, early modern philosophy (especially Thomas Reid), philosophy of language and mind, and cognitive science. He holds a BA from Simon Fraser University, MA from Dalhousie University, and PhD from the University of Arizona.
His recent work explores social dimensions of knowledge attributions, epistemic contextualism, and Reid’s contributions to epistemology. Key publications include analyses of Reid’s first principles, the Gettier problem, and the relationship between naturalism and epistemic externalism. He has contributed to major reference works like the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy and the Routledge Encyclopedia of Philosophy.
Dr. Rysiew’s awards include the Philosophical Quarterly Essay Prize (2001). He has edited special journal issues on Thomas Reid and serves on the editorial board of the Canadian Journal of Philosophy. His teaching spans epistemology, philosophy of perception, and early modern philosophy.
