Patrick McDonald is an Associate Professor at the Department of Government, College of Liberal Arts, University of Texas at Austin. Holding a Ph.D. from Ohio State University, he specializes in international relations theory, economic causes of war and peace, and international security. His research has been published in top journals including American Journal of Political Science and World Politics.
McDonald's work examines the interplay between capitalism, fiscal politics, and conflict prevention. His 2009 book The Invisible Hand of Peace (Cambridge University Press) argues that capitalist economies create structural constraints that reduce war likelihood. Recent publications analyze trilateral power dynamics, coercive human rights strategies, and historical fiscal commitments in international diplomacy.
He teaches courses on international relations theory, international political economy, and war's global impacts. His Spring 2023 course War and Global Political Change explores conflict's transformative effects on international order. Office hours are held virtually on Mondays.
