Patrick McDevitt is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University at Buffalo (SUNY), serving concurrently as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Education & University Honors College. His academic career includes roles as Co-Editor of the Journal of British Studies (2005-2009) and adjunct fellowships at institutions like the Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis. He holds a PhD from Rutgers University (1999), a BA from NYU (1992), and a BA (Hons) from Canterbury University (New Zealand, 1994).
His research focuses on modern European history with specialties in Ireland, Britain, Atlantic World connections, and imperial/colonial dynamics. Key themes include social and cultural history through lenses of fashion, sport, gender, and liberation theology. Current projects include a book manuscript on The Great Irish Famine: A Global History and analyses of colonial sport's role in power structures.
Award-winning educator and researcher, McDevitt has received grants from the NEH and SUNY. His publications span monographs, journal articles, and edited volumes exploring topics like Victorian sport nationalism, gender in colonial contexts, and Irish-British cultural conflicts. He teaches courses on Irish history, British imperialism, global soccer culture, and masculinity studies.
