Dr. Jane G. V. McGaughey is the Johnson Chair of Québec and Canadian Irish Studies at Concordia University (2021-26) and Assistant Professor of Irish Diaspora Studies since 2012. She holds a PhD from Birkbeck College, University of London (2008), and her scholarship bridges Irish diaspora history, gender studies, and colonialism.

Her research focuses on Irish migration, masculinity, and violence, particularly in colonial Canada and the Atlantic World. She explores intersections of mental health, imperialism, and popular culture portrayals of Ireland. Her recent work analyzes cholera pandemics in Canada’s colonial medical system, funded by the SSHRC Insight Grant. She is also the creator of the podcast The Irish in Canada, which examines Irish immigrant narratives and descendant communities.
Her publications span monographs like Violent Loyalties (2020) and co-edited volumes addressing gender, migration, and social finance. She has held prestigious fellowships, including the Canada-UK Foundation and Eccles Centre Fellow (2022) and NEH Faculty Fellow at Notre Dame (2009-10).

Dr. McGaughey supervises graduate research on Irish diaspora history, with emphasis on gender, warfare, and migration. Her current projects include The Body of Mary Boyd and The Mad Irish?, and she has taught at Concordia and the Royal Military College of Canada prior to her current role.
