His research centers on international political economy with three interconnected strands: the political determinants of innovation-intensive foreign direct investment in emerging economies (culminating in his 2017 MIT Press book), monetary politics and exchange rate regime formation, and Latin American political economy. He employs mixed methods including large-n econometric analysis, case studies in Brazil and Ireland, and historical institutional analysis, with recent work expanding into 19th century American monetary politics.
Egan's publication trajectory reveals evolving focus from contemporary Latin American investment politics (2010-2015) toward broader international political economy questions involving exchange rate regimes (2017-2022) and historical monetary analysis. His work consistently examines how domestic institutions mediate international economic forces, with increasing attention to subnational analysis and historical institutionalism while maintaining core interests in multinational corporation behavior and development outcomes.
His scholarly contributions have received significant recognition through competitive awards:
- Stone Center Faculty Summer Research Grant (2015)
- Policies, Institutions, and Innovation-Intensive FDI Research Seed Grant (2012)
- Mellow Dissertation Fellowship for Latin American/Caribbean Research (2009)
- US Department of Education FLAS Fellowship (2005)
- Certificate of Appointment as Irish Central Statistics Office Officer
Egan teaches graduate courses including Research Methods I/II and International Political Economy alongside undergraduate courses in Latin American Politics and International Relations. His grant-funded research has supported fieldwork in Brazil and Ireland, enabling the case studies underpinning his book and multiple journal articles. He has served on departmental committees including Graduate Studies and Undergraduate Curriculum.
Through the Stone Center, he collaborates with interdisciplinary teams examining inter-American policy and Caribbean studies, participating in faculty research initiatives that connect his monetary politics and investment research to regional development challenges in the Americas.
