Patrick Hicks serves as Writer-in-Residence and Visiting Professor at Augustana University. A dual citizen of Ireland and the United States, he has lived internationally across Northern Ireland, England, Germany, and Spain before returning to his Midwestern roots in Minnesota with his British wife and adopted South Korean son.
His academic credentials include:
- M.A. in English from DePaul University
- M.A. in Irish Writing from Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland
- Ph.D. in Irish Writing from the University of Sussex, England
Hicks specializes in Creative Writing with deep expertise in Poetry, Fiction, and Holocaust Studies, exemplified by his acclaimed novel The Commandant of Lubizec. His work explores identity, historical trauma, and regional narratives, recently manifested in the travelogue Greater Minnesota which blends personal reflection with cultural history across the state.
His literary achievements include the Glimmer Train Fiction Award, multiple Pushcart Prize nominations, and finalist positions for major book awards. Significant funding has been secured through the Bush Artist Foundation, Loft Literary Center, and National Endowment for the Humanities grants, alongside two Emmy nominations.
As Writer-in-Residence, Hicks actively mentors students while maintaining an extensive national and international reading schedule across universities, literary centers, and cultural institutions including Waterstones in London and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
