Patrick Geraghty is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University's Department of Medicine. His research explores immune responses in diseased lungs, with a focus on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, pulmonary infections, and fibrosis. He serves as Associate Program Director for Research and Academic Development in the Internal Medicine Residency Program and directs the Internal Medicine Research Track.
- Education:
- National University of Ireland (Undergraduate & PhD)
- Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (Fellowship, 2007)
- Columbia University (Fellowship, 2011)
Dr. Geraghty's work investigates the role of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) in regulating lung inflammation and injury, particularly in smoke-exposed environments. His experimental approaches span molecular biology, biochemistry, cell biology, and physiology. He has secured numerous grants, including NIH R01, Department of Defense, and Alpha-1 Foundation awards.
Recent publications highlight his team's discoveries on PP2A activators for fibrosis therapy, diabetes-COPD comorbidity, and smoke-induced inflammatory dysregulation. These studies emphasize molecular signaling, protease regulation, and environmental exposure impacts.
- Scientific Awards & Grants:
- NIA R01 AG073317 (Co-investigator)
- NIH 1R01HL162590 (Co-investigator)
- Alpha-1 Foundation grants (PI)
- Flight Attendant Medical Research Institute awards
