Patrick Geoghegan

Dr. Patrick Geoghegan is a Senior Lecturer and Programme Director for Biomedical Engineering at Aston University's College of Engineering. His roles include teaching Biofluids and Computational Fluid Dynamics, along with supervising PhD students in fluid dynamics applied to cardiovascular and ophthalmic diseases.

Education:

• PhD in Mechanical Engineering (specializing in Biofluids), University of Canterbury, New Zealand (2013)
• MEng in Aeronautical Engineering (First Class), University of Glasgow, Scotland (2007)

Research focuses on two core areas:

• Biofluids: Combines experimental biofluid mechanics and CFD to address cardiovascular, respiratory, and ophthalmic challenges.
• Forensic Engineering: Specializes in bloodstain pattern analysis, knife crime investigation, and aerodynamics of violent trauma scenarios.

His recent work includes developing actuated cervical spine models, analyzing carotid bifurcation hemodynamics, and simulating glaucoma filtration surgeries. Key techniques used are particle image velocimetry (PIV) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD).
