Patrick Flanaghan

Patrick Flanaghan is a Lecturer in Cor Anglais at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He also holds an Associate status at the Royal Academy of Music. As a professional musician, he serves as Principal Cor Anglais of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and has held guest principal roles with prestigious ensembles such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, and BBC National Orchestra of Wales. His career spans Germany and the UK, including guest engagements with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra Hamburg, and Aurora Orchestra.

Education:

• Began musical training as a chorister at Salisbury Cathedral
• Studied at the Purcell School of Music, under Melanie Ragge
• Received a scholarship to study Oboe with Celia Nicklin and Cor Anglais with Geoffrey Brown at the Royal Academy of Music
• DAAD scholarship recipient for studies with Prof. Emanuel Abbühl at Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim

Patrick’s research interests focus on advanced performance practices of the oboe and cor anglais, including historical techniques, solo repertoire, and chamber music collaborations. His work emphasizes bridging traditional and modern pedagogical approaches in wind instrument instruction.

He has contributed to notable recordings such as Solo Oboe on La Folia’s The Vivaldi Files, Triple Concerto with Rob Keeley, and Quiet City by Copland. His awards include the Leila Bull Oboe Prize and DAAD scholarship.

Patrick has taught masterclasses and courses at multiple institutions including the Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Trinity Laban, Hochschule für Musik Mainz, and Staatliche Hochschule Mannheim. His teaching spans pedagogical methods for oboe and cor anglais, with a focus on orchestral and solo performance.
