Patrick Desjardins is a Full Professor in the Department of Engineering Physics at Polytechnique Montreal, where he also serves as Director of the Campus Development Sector within the Business and Resources Directorate. His research focuses on advanced materials for high-technology applications, particularly in microelectronics and optoelectronics, with over 193 publications spanning more than two decades.
Dr. Desjardins earned his B.Eng., M.Sc.A., and Ph.D. from Polytechnique Montreal. His educational background has provided a strong foundation for his work in materials science and engineering physics, enabling him to develop a comprehensive research program that bridges fundamental science and practical applications.
His research interests span surfaces and interfaces, thin films, semiconductors, epitaxial growth, and nanotechnology. Dr. Desjardins' group conducts fundamental and applied research on advanced materials, with a primary objective of understanding atom-surface interactions during crystalline growth under highly non-equilibrium conditions to control microstructure at the atomic scale. Specific research topics include epitaxial growth of III-V semiconductor alloys, quantum dot synthesis, piezoelectric materials, and advanced thin film characterization techniques.
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong focus on nanoscale materials and their properties, with consistent contributions to understanding 2D materials like graphene, semiconductor heterostructures, and piezoelectric materials. His work demonstrates a clear trajectory toward atomic-scale material engineering for next-generation electronic and optoelectronic devices, with publications appearing in high-impact journals across physics, materials science, and engineering disciplines.
