Patrick Culbert

Patrick Culbert is an Associate Professor of Teaching in the Department of Forest and Conservation Sciences at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of Forestry. As Director of Curriculum, he focuses on pedagogical innovation and applied conservation science.

His research examines drivers of spatial biodiversity patterns, agricultural land-use legacies, and climate impacts on avian communities. He integrates technology into forestry education through virtual field instruction and adaptive quizzing systems.

Recent publications analyze long-term effects of housing development on bird communities, climate stressors (heat waves, droughts), and remote sensing applications. These span ecology, climate science, and biodiversity monitoring.

Projects include Augmented Forests (virtual field instruction) and Reducing language-related cognitive load for non-native English speakers in forestry education. He maintains active collaborations in conservation science and educational technology.
