Patrick Cheney is the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Pennsylvania State University. He holds a B.A. from the University of Montana (1972), and M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (1974, 1979). His research focuses on English Renaissance literature, textual scholarship, and the evolution of authorship in early modern contexts. Cheney’s work bridges literary analysis with historical and materialist approaches, emphasizing intertextuality, classical reception, and the sublime in works by Shakespeare, Marlowe, and Spenser.
Cheney has authored or edited over a dozen influential books, including Shakespeare’s Literary Authorship and Marlowe’s Republican Authorship, and serves on editorial boards for journals like Studies in English Literature and Spenser Studies. He has received major grants from the Mellon Foundation and NEH, and his awards include the Roma Gill Award (twice) and Penn State’s Faculty Scholar Medal. Currently, he leads the 15-volume Oxford History of Poetry in English, a landmark project spanning global literary traditions.
Cheney’s textual scholarship includes roles as General Editor of the Oxford Edition of the Collected Works of Edmund Spenser and Textual Editor for The Norton Shakespeare. His interdisciplinary approach integrates close reading with historical context, making him a leading voice in early modern literary studies.
