Dr. Patrick Bury is a Senior Associate Professor (Reader) in Security at the University of Bath's School of Politics, Languages and International Studies (PoLIS). He holds affiliations with the Institute for Digital Security and Behaviour (IDSB) and the Centre for the Study of Violence. Specializing in counter-terrorism, military sociology, and international security, his research bridges academic and practitioner perspectives. He is a UK Research and Innovation Future Leaders Fellow investigating transatlantic counter-terrorism transformations since 2001. Bury also contributes to global initiatives like GLOBSEC's Intelligence Reform Initiative and the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT).
He earned his PhD in Military Sociology from the University of Exeter (2016), focusing on British Army Reserve transformation. His work has influenced UK defense policy and informed parliamentary committees. Previously, Bury served as a British Army Captain in Afghanistan and later as a NATO analyst. His media engagements include BBC, Al Jazeera, and National Geographic's Nazi Megastructures.
Research interests span transatlantic counter-terrorism, military professionalism, and security challenges in Ukraine/Taiwan. His recent publications address conscription, fraud in military awards, and gig economy vulnerabilities in Russian sabotage. Bury's work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals on peace, justice, and strong institutions (Goal 16).
