Patricia Sheehan

Dr. Patricia Sheehan is a Lecturer, Work Placement Coordinator, and International Mobility Officer in the Department of Sport & Exercise Science at South East Technological University (SETU), formerly Waterford Institute of Technology. She is an active exercise oncology researcher dedicated to integrating physical activity into cancer care and bridging research with clinical implementation.

Her research focuses on exercise interventions for cancer recovery, chronic disease management, and health promotion. Dr. Sheehan is a member of the Biomedical Research Team, Health Behaviour Research Group at SETU, HRB Clinical Research Facility in Cork, and University Hospital Waterford. She is also involved with the American College of Sports Medicine's Exercise Oncology Special Interest Group and the International Society of Exercise Oncology.

Dr. Sheehan's publications demonstrate a strong focus on exercise-based rehabilitation for cancer survivors, with particular emphasis on cancer-related fatigue management. Her research spans clinical trials, scoping reviews of national exercise initiatives, and innovative interventions like dance therapy and football-inspired training programs for cancer survivors.

Dr. Sheehan actively mentors undergraduate and postgraduate students, coordinates work placements, and serves as International Mobility Officer, supporting students in gaining international experience. She has developed strong research collaborations with University Hospital Waterford, UPMC Whitfield Cancer Centre, Irish Cancer Society, Solas Cancer Support Centre, and other healthcare organizations.

She has been instrumental in developing the ExWell Medical MoveOn Programme at SETU Arena, which provides exercise rehabilitation for cancer patients in Southeast Ireland. Dr. She also serves on the steering committee for the ExWell at SETU Programme and has contributed to national policy development, including the extension of National Physical Activity Guidelines to include pregnancy and postpartum populations.
