Patricia Michaelson is an Associate Professor of Literary Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), affiliated with the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology. Her academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Chicago (1985), an M.A. (1977), and a B.A. from Kirkland College (1975). Specializing in 18th- and 19th-century British literature, her research focuses on gender studies, language practices, and the intersections of religion, feminism, and literary criticism.
Michaelson’s work explores themes like women’s speech in Austen’s novels, religious influences on feminist thought, and the cultural contexts of literary works. Notable publications include Speaking Volumes: Women, Reading and Speech in Austen and Her Time (2002) and articles on Wollstonecraft and the French Revolution debate. She has received prestigious awards such as the Victor Worsfold Teaching Award (2003) and was a finalist for the MLA First Book Prize.
Her professional service includes roles at UTD’s SACSCOC assessment committee, chairing the Core Committee for Women and Minorities, and external roles like book review editor for Arts & Humanities in Higher Education. Michaelson has also held fellowships at Yale University and Emory University, reflecting her active engagement in both academia and scholarly community leadership.
