Her work bridges theoretical frameworks like Bruner's learning theory with classroom implementation, particularly through Orff Schulwerk and Kodaly techniques. She emphasizes hands-on, child-centered learning environments that foster musical development from early childhood through advanced studies.
Her publication trends reveal consistent exploration of music assessment tools, children's vocal development, and liturgical music applications. Recent works examine preservice teacher training methodologies, handbell percussion techniques for worship settings, and devotional music practices for youth choirs, demonstrating her commitment to both academic rigor and practical church music ministry.
Professional leadership includes:
- Board Member, Handbell Association of America (Area 9, 2021-Present)
- Member, Oklahoma Music Educators Association (2018-Present)
- Member, National Association for Music Education (2011-Present)
Dr. Nelson actively contributes to academic discourse through conference presentations on music assessment and handbell techniques, while maintaining active involvement in church music ministries as choir director and organist. Her work integrates academic scholarship with practical church music applications, particularly through children's choir development and worship music innovation.
