Patricia Johnston holds the Rev. J. Gerard Mears, S.J., Chair in Fine Arts and serves as Visual Arts Program Coordinator (History) at the College of the Holy Cross, where she is a nationally recognized scholar of American art and visual culture.
Her educational background includes:
- Ph.D. from Boston University
Dr. Johnston's research examines the evolution of high and low art concepts from the 18th to 20th centuries and their relationship to social representation. Her expertise spans American Art, History of Photography, and Modern Art, with significant contributions to understanding early American prints, maritime visual history, and colonial New England's artistic landscape through interdisciplinary methodologies.
Her scientific awards and fellowships include:

Dr. Johnston has directed major NEH-funded initiatives including Landmarks of American History projects on Salem's maritime history (2004-2005), the summer institute "The Visual Culture of Colonial New England" (2006), and "Picturing Early America: People, Places, and Events, 1770-1870" (2009-2010). She organized the Terra Foundation-supported conference "Global Trade and Visual Arts in Federal New England" (2010), which forms the basis of her forthcoming edited volume with Caroline Frank.
