Dr Ross Johnston is an Honorary Associate Professor at the School of Historical and Philosophical Inquiry, University of Queensland. He holds a Bachelor, Masters (Coursework), and PhD from UQ. His research focuses on Queensland history, colonial studies, and environmental history, with particular attention to Indigenous leadership, cultural preservation, and transnational ecological exchanges. Dr Johnston has reviewed numerous books on Australian colonial history and environmental policies, contributing to debates on national identity and environmental governance.
His academic works include seminal texts like The Call of the Land: A History of Queensland to the Present Day (1982) and critical analyses of colonial figures such as Henry Jordan and John Fenwick. He has advised over 10 postgraduate theses, including studies on Queensland’s soldier settlement schemes and immigrant communities. Johnston’s supervision emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to historical research, blending archival analysis with social and economic perspectives.
