Patricia Anne Masters is a Professor of Sociology at George Mason University, specializing in Gender Studies, Social Psychology, and Qualitative Research Methods. She holds a PhD from American University (1998) and has extensive experience in sociocultural ethnography. Her research focuses on community-building through cultural practices, including her seminal work on the Philadelphia Mummers Parade, published as The Philadelphia Mummers: Building Community through Play (2007).
Education: B.A. in Sociology from George Mason University (1990), M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from American University (1993, 1998). She transitioned into academia after a career break to pursue education, reflecting her interest in balancing career and family. Her current research explores identity transformation among Muslim-American college women adopting traditional dress, combining ethnographic methods with life history interviews.
Teaching portfolio includes classical theory, juvenile delinquency, marriage and family dynamics, and qualitative methods. She actively contributes to public health research, addressing topics like LGBTQ+ youth health messaging, disaster communication, and reproductive health access in Peru and Latin America. Patricia is affiliated with the Center for Social Science Research and Next System Studies at GMU, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary social science research.
