Pascale Garaud is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Baskin School of Engineering, University of California at Santa Cruz. She specializes in fluid dynamics and magnetohydrodynamics applied to astrophysics and geophysics, focusing on mixing processes in stellar and planetary systems. Her research integrates numerical simulations and analytical models to study phenomena like solar tachocline dynamics, double-diffusive convection, and dust dynamics in protostellar disks.
- Chair, Department of Applied Mathematics, UCSC
- Founding Director, Kavli Summer Program in Astrophysics
- Editorial Board, Physical Review Fluids
- Associate Editor, Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics
Her research interests include:
- Solar and stellar internal dynamics
- Double-diffusive convection in stars and oceans
- Turbulent transport mechanisms
- Shear instabilities and magnetic confinement
- Planetary formation and core dynamics
- Parallel numerical algorithms for stellar modeling
Recent publications highlight her work on stratified turbulence, fingering convection, and magnetohydrodynamic processes in stars and planets. Her group has developed numerical tools for simulating solar interior dynamics and planetary core evolution, with applications to lithium depletion in stars and giant planet formation.
Scientific honors include:
- Fellow of the American Physical Society (2019)
- NSF CAREER grant for magnetized stellar evolution studies
She mentors graduate students in projects spanning solar physics, planetary science, and computational fluid dynamics, with alumni pursuing academic and industry roles. Her collaborations span institutions like CU Boulder, Newcastle University, and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
