Pascale Dufour is a Full Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Montreal's Faculty of Arts and Sciences. She directs the Collectif de recherche Action Politique et Démocratie (CAPED) and serves as the coordinator for the Minor in Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Her academic career spans over two decades with significant contributions to the understanding of social movements and collective action in comparative perspective.
Her research focuses on social movements as major political actors operating in informal public spaces rather than institutional arenas. She examines how collective action emerges, endures, and transforms societies, emphasizing the complementarity between different forms of political action. Recent work explores social forums as sites of direct democracy and consensus-building, while newer research investigates individualized political actions like urban agriculture and gleaning. Her current projects analyze ecological struggles and their impact on other social protests in Canada and France, as well as housing evictions.
Professor Dufour's scholarly output reveals consistent engagement with transnational social movements, feminist activism, and the spatial dimensions of protest. Her publications demonstrate a methodological commitment to comparative analysis across national contexts while maintaining focus on local manifestations of collective action. The evolution of her work shows increasing attention to intersectional approaches, particularly regarding gender dynamics within social movements.
- Recipient of the best book published in French by the Canadian Political Science Association (2013)

Her research is supported by substantial grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Quebec Research Funds - Society and Culture (FRQSC), reflecting her leadership in collaborative, interdisciplinary projects examining political participation, social justice, and democratic innovation.
Professor Dufour leads the Collectif de recherche Action Politique et Démocratie (CAPED), which serves as a hub for scholars studying political action and democratic processes. Her work connects academic research with practical applications through collaborations with community organizations and policy makers addressing contemporary challenges in democratic governance and social mobilization.
