Dr. Pascale Barthe is a Professor in the Department of World Languages and Cultures at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Her research examines early modern cultural encounters between France and the Ottoman Empire, with particular focus on travel narratives, cross-cultural exchanges, and diplomatic relations during the 16th-18th centuries.
Her scholarly work analyzes how French merchants, travelers, and diplomats interpreted and documented their experiences in Ottoman territories, Persia, and Mughal India. Dr. Barthe investigates how these interactions shaped European perceptions of Eastern cultures and vice versa.
Recent publications explore French merchants in Isfahan, natural history networks in Renaissance Europe, and French engagements with 18th-century Bengal. Her research methodology combines archival analysis with cultural theory to understand historical intercultural dynamics.
