Robert Travers is Professor of History at Cornell University's College of Arts and Sciences, specializing in British imperial history with a focus on South Asia. His research examines encounters between British and South Asian political systems, particularly the appropriation of Mughal governance forms by British empire-builders in 18th-century India.
Travers investigates the political thought of early British administrators in India and their use of Mughal legal frameworks to legitimize colonial rule. His current work explores the impeachment trial of Warren Hastings and its significance for global legal history.
His publications analyze colonial legal transformations, petitioning systems, and the role of cultural intermediaries in empire-building processes. Recent scholarship focuses on how British rulers developed colonial civil law through adaptations of Mughal norms.
