Parvis Ghassem-Fachandi serves as Associate Professor of Anthropology at Rutgers University. Born in West-Berlin during Germany's division and raised across Montréal, Paris, and Berlin, his ethnographic work bridges South Asian and European contexts with focus on political violence, religious practice, and migrant experiences.
His research centers on Hindu nationalism, Sufi traditions in Gujarat, and post-2015 Syrian migration to Berlin, exploring themes of moods (Stimmung), mutual belonging, and erotic apprehensions through collaborative work with John Borneman. Key publications include Pogrom in Gujarat: Hindu Nationalism and Anti-Muslim Violence in India (Princeton University Press) and Muslimische Heilige in Gujarat (ECA), with an ongoing monograph examining proverbs, prayer, and possession among Ahmadabad's Fatehvadi Pathan community.
