Parmit Chilana is an Associate Professor and Ebco/Eppich Chair at Simon Fraser University's School of Computing Science. She holds a PhD in Information Science from the University of Washington (2013), an MSc from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2006), and a BSc in Computing Science from Simon Fraser University (2005). Her research focuses on human-computer interaction (HCI), design of interactive systems, and crowdsourcing/social computing. She teaches courses on user-centered design, research methods, and introductory programming.
Her work emphasizes inclusive design, such as improving accessibility in video conferencing for d/Deaf/HOH users and creating tangible tools like TangiBooks for teaching programming. She explores challenges in AR/VR development, automation in software tools, and novice user experiences with complex applications. Chilana leads the Tangent Lab and collaborates on projects like LemonAid for contextual help systems and CircuitStyle for hardware education.
Courses taught include CMPT 415/416 Special Research Projects and CMPT 894 Directed Reading. Her research has addressed topics ranging from gesture discoverability in AR apps to automated learning tools for online education. Chilana’s contributions span academic-industry partnerships and educational technology innovation.
