Paola Sessa is an Associate Professor at the University of Padua, focusing on the neural mechanisms underlying face and emotion processing. Her research explores how the sensorimotor system contributes to facial expression recognition, particularly in healthy individuals and those with facial paralysis. She investigates the neural bases of conscious face perception and employs electrophysiological methods like EEG to study visual working memory, empathy, and cross-modal interactions.
Her work addresses questions such as how facial mimicry influences emotion perception and the impact of physical barriers or social context on empathic neural responses. She has contributed to studies on social anxiety, stress physiology, and developmental disorders like autism, linking cognitive and neural processes to behavioral outcomes. Her lab’s interdisciplinary approach integrates neuroscientific methods with clinical and social psychology insights.
