She serves as Co-Director of the International School of Ethology and leads the Behavioral Biology Laboratory. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Animal Biology-Ethology (University of Florence, 1992) and a Degree in Biological Sciences (University of Parma, 1987). She has held academic roles at multiple institutions including University of Bologna and University of Missouri-Columbia.
Research interests focus on biological bases of behavior, gene-environment interactions, neuroendocrine mechanisms, and sex differences using Mus musculus and human models. Key themes include endocrine disruptors’ impacts on neurodevelopment, maternal-infant dyads, stress vulnerability, and animal welfare. Current projects involve the LIFE-MILCH initiative and Antarctic tear-film evolution studies.
Key article trends span endocrine disruptor epidemiology, neuroglobin in perinatal medicine, epigenetic influences on puberty, and evolutionary approaches to psychiatry. She advises on animal model validation and serves on editorial boards including Frontiers of Neuroscience. Her scientific leadership includes grants from European Commission, Italian Ministry of Research, and Takeda Cambridge. She has organized major conferences on sex differences and endocrine disruptors.
