Panagiota (Nota) Klentrou is a distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Kinesiology at Brock University. Her research focuses on exercise physiology, particularly the cellular mechanisms linking exercise and diet to bone development in children and adolescents. Supported by NSERC, CIHR, and sports organizations, her work explores bone physiology, inflammation, adiposity impacts, and sclerostin biology. She leads over 120 publications and holds key roles in Osteoporosis Canada and the International Gymnastics Federation.
Research interests include bone adaptation in youth athletes, inflammatory responses to exercise, and the interplay between diet and skeletal health. Notable contributions address how high-impact sports influence bone remodeling and how obesity interventions affect bone turnover. She has pioneered studies on dairy consumption effects and recovery strategies in young athletes.
- Professional Affiliations: Fellow of CSEP, Scientific Advisor for Osteoporosis Canada, and member of ACSM and NASPEM
- Awards: Marilyn Rose Leadership Award (2017), Chancellor’s Research Excellence Chair (2009)
- Current Projects: Investigating sclerostin’s role in adipose tissue and bone metabolism
Her grants include NSERC discovery grants and CIHR-funded interventions targeting adolescent bone health. Klentrou mentors graduate and undergraduate students in exercise physiology labs, emphasizing translational research bridging basic science and clinical applications.
