Pamela Popielarz is an Associate Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Sociology at the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). Her research focuses on organizations and systemic inequalities related to race/ethnicity and gender, particularly through the lens of voluntary associations and historical case studies like 19th-century American fraternal orders. She employs a mix of institutional, critical, ecological, and social network theories to analyze how organizational structures perpetuate biases favoring Whiteness and masculinity.
Her work spans both quantitative and qualitative methods, with recent emphasis on historical archival data. Key projects include examining the legacy of fraternal orders on business-world inequality and analyzing gender segregation in voluntary organizations. Popielarz has held leadership roles such as Associate Head and Director of Graduate Studies in her department, and she contributes to academic governance through roles in UIC’s Graduate College and professional societies like the ASA Section on Organizations, Occupations and Work.
Her research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and the ASA Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline, and her upcoming book Order of Business explores the historical impact of fraternal orders on modern inequality.
