Dr. Palwinder Athwal-Kooner is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader of the BPS-accredited MSc Forensic Psychology Programme at Nottingham Trent University's School of Social Sciences. She holds dual roles as a BPS Chartered Forensic Psychologist and HCPC-registered practitioner, alongside ACAT accreditation in Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT). Her career spans over two decades in forensic mental health, including clinical work with individuals with psychosis, personality disorders, and ASD, as well as roles in NHS, police, and probation services.
Her research focuses on evaluating intervention programs such as Circles Southeast Mentoring and CAT-informed staff training in forensic hospitals. She has collaborated with institutions like Cygnet Hospital and St Andrew’s Healthcare. Dr. Athwal-Kooner is a recognized trainer in risk assessment tools (HCR-20, START) and has delivered workshops on CAT applications in forensic settings for the British Psychological Society. She also contributed to the Department of Health’s Personality Disorder training framework.
Her publications emphasize forensic mental health interventions, nurse training efficacy, and ASD service improvements. Professional activities include knowledge exchange with Circles and Cygnet Hospital, reflecting her commitment to translational research and clinical practice.
