Kirwan's research centers on contemporary Indigenous literatures, examining the complex relationship between tribal sovereignty, cultural continuance, and historical trauma. His work particularly explores the productive friction underlying various forms of sovereignty while acknowledging historical junctures where indigenous communities experienced settler violence. A significant portion of his scholarship investigates how writers and artists grapple with complicated questions regarding indigenous realities, occupancy, colonialism, and continuance in the contemporary moment. His research is characterized by deep commitment to collaborative practice, notably working with Choctaw writers, artists, and historians to explore intercultural connections between the Choctaw and Irish peoples.
Analyzing Kirwan's recent publications reveals a consistent focus on transnational indigenous studies, particularly the remarkable historical connection between the Choctaw Nation and Ireland. His work demonstrates growing interest in decolonizing methodologies and the theoretical frameworks surrounding indigenous sovereignty. The publications show progression from literary analysis of individual authors toward broader cultural and historical examinations of indigenous experiences across national boundaries, with increasing emphasis on collaborative research methodologies.
