Scanlan's research focuses on the historical dimensions of labor and employment relations, particularly examining enslaved and free labor in Britain and the British Empire during the 18th and 19th centuries. His current project explores the transformation of the 'home' and 'work' divide in the industrial era. His work spans political economy, global capitalism, and the intersection of colonialism and slavery with economic systems.
His publications include Slave Empire: How Slavery Made Modern Britain (2020, paperback 2022) and Freedom’s Debtors: British Antislavery in Sierra Leone in the Age of Revolution (2017). A forthcoming book in 2025, Rot: An Imperial History of the Irish Famine, reinterprets the Irish Great Famine through the lens of economic inequality and precarious labor conditions.
Scanlan supervises graduate students interested in the historical aspects of labor relations, with a focus on public sector unions in Canada and anti-work/anti-technology movements. His scholarly work has appeared in leading journals such as American Historical Review, Journal of British Studies, and Past & Present.
