Dr. Pablo Pereira-Doel is Director of Undergraduate Hospitality Programmes at Surrey Business School, co-director of the Human Insight Lab, and Water Programme co-lead at the Institute for Sustainability. As an applied social scientist, he specializes in sustainability-oriented innovations using behavioral nudges, persuasive communication, and biometric technologies to drive pro-environmental behavior change.
His research focuses on sustainable water behavior in tourism, particularly developing smart technologies like shower timers to reduce water consumption. Field experiments demonstrate 25% reductions in shower duration through real-time eco-feedback systems. Research spans behavioral psychology, sustainable technology adoption, and cross-cultural studies of resource conservation in hospitality settings.
Industry collaborations include Scandic Hotels, Hilton Worldwide, Aguardio ApS, Anglian Water, and UN Environment Programme. Research has been funded by ESRC Impact Acceleration Awards, UKRI Global Challenges Research Fund, and an ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship. Current doctoral students investigate SME sustainability practices, hedonic aspects of pro-environmental behavior, and behavioral nudges in tourism.
Dr. Pereira-Doel teaches modules on digital innovation, business analytics, and experimental research methods. His work has been featured in international media including Financial Times and The Washington Post.
