Pui Sze Cheung is a Creative Health Associate at NHS Mersey Care and an affiliated researcher at Edge Hill University's Research Centre for Arts and Wellbeing. She holds a PhD in Music Therapy from the University of Limerick (2024), an MA in Music Therapy (2018), and a Bachelor of Social Science in Psychology from the University of Hong Kong (2003). Her work focuses on music therapy in perinatal mental health and arts-based interventions for mental wellbeing, particularly among children and young people aged 9-13.
She pioneered Ireland’s first music therapy service for perinatal mental health at the University Maternity Hospital Limerick (HSE) and leads the Arts4Us project, scaling arts initiatives for youth mental health. She contributes to teaching at Edge Hill University’s MSc Psychotherapy and Counselling (Contemporary Creative Approaches) and the University of Limerick’s MA Music Therapy program. Her research has produced 17 peer-reviewed articles and one book chapter, addressing topics like music therapy efficacy, maternal care, and perinatal wellbeing.
Key projects include the Music and Perinatal Wellbeing initiative, Mothers Using Music (MuM), and the interdisciplinary study on music’s role in maternal healthcare. She is a member of the Music and Parental Wellbeing Research Network and Musical Care International Network, advocating for arts-informed healthcare practices aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and wellbeing.
