P. David Josephy

Dr. P. David Josephy is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Guelph. His research focuses on molecular and genetic toxicology, including environmental mutagens, bacterial mutagenicity assays, and enzymatic mechanisms of drug and toxicant metabolism. He has advised over 30 graduate students and published over 110 refereed papers. Dr. Josephy teaches Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Toxicology courses and co-authored the textbook Molecular Toxicology (Oxford University Press). He is also Co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Mutation Research - Genetic Toxicology and Environmental Mutagenesis.

Research Interests:

Dr. Josephy's work examines environmental mutagens, enzyme-catalyzed metabolism of toxicants (e.g., nitroreductases, P450 enzymes, glutathione transferases), and the mutagenic effects of cyano-substituted nitroaromatic compounds. His lab employs a range of techniques, including genotoxicity assays, enzyme assays, HPLC-MS analysis, and proteomics. Recent studies have explored the toxicology of azo dyes and redox metabolites.

Grants & Advising:

He has secured grants supporting research on xenobiotic metabolism and mutagenesis. Over 30 graduate students have been mentored under his supervision, contributing to advancements in toxicology and enzymology.
