Ozlem Goner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the College of Staten Island, City University of New York (CUNY), and affiliated with the Middle Eastern Studies program at CUNY's Graduate Center. Her research focuses on state violence, memory studies, and marginalized identities in Turkey, particularly in Dersim. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst and a B.A. in Political Science/Sociology from Bogazici University, Istanbul.
Her work bridges academic scholarship with activist movements, emphasizing intersectional feminist frameworks and anti-colonial perspectives. Key projects include her 2017 book Turkish National Identity and Its Outsiders, which examines state violence and memory in Dersim. She is active in organizations like the Emergency Committee for Rojava and the Kurdish Gender Studies Network.
Research interests span political sociology, environmental dispossession, and the sociology of place. Her articles analyze historical traumas, neoliberalism's impact on identity, and the politicization of memory. She contributes to interdisciplinary conversations on race, ethnicity, and social movements.
