Dr. Ozgur Batuman is an Associate Professor of Citrus Pathology at the University of Florida's Southwest Florida Research and Education Center (SWFREC), part of the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. He joined SWFREC in 2016 after working as a project scientist in Plant Pathology at UC Davis, where he focused on integrated pest management for plant viruses like Tomato spotted wilt virus. His research at SWFREC centers on citrus pathology, specifically understanding and mitigating pathogens threatening Florida's citrus industry. He develops diagnostic tools, IPM strategies, and therapeutic delivery systems to combat diseases such as Huanglongbing (HLB) and Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV).
Education and Professional Experience: Earned graduate training in plant pathology, transitioning from UC Davis to SWFREC. Active in extension programs, authoring numerous Florida Citrus Production Guides and peer-reviewed articles. Collaborates with USDA-ARS and international teams on disease surveillance and control.
Research Interests: Citrus disease diagnostics, exotic pathogen management, vector-borne diseases, molecular virology, and sustainable agricultural practices. Specializes in developing practical solutions for growers, including protective covers (IPCs) and trunk-injection therapies.
Key Contributions: Authored/co-authored publications on ToBRFV detection, IPC efficacy, and CTV-SP exotic disease preparedness. Leads projects on automation of citrus tree treatments and antibiotic efficacy studies. Advises graduate students like Salih Yilmaz and Susmita Gaire.
