Ozan Felix Sousbois is a Research Fellow at the University of Stavanger's Department of Media and Social Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, holding a prestigious Marie Curie postdoctoral fellowship. His interdisciplinary work bridges gender studies, Islamic studies, and digital culture within contemporary European and Turkish contexts.
His research critically examines masculinity through two interconnected lenses: conservative political masculinity in Turkey (analyzing public displays of Islam via material tokens like "clip-objects") and anti-feminist digital ecosystems (investigating manospheric cultures, incel communities, and queer positioning in online spaces). He employs ethnographic and discourse analysis to explore how gendered identities intersect with religion, nationalism, and digital aesthetics in contexts of social polarization.
Analysis of his 2021-2024 publications reveals consistent methodological innovation in studying gendered extremism. Works like "Footprints of Protest Masculinity" and "Fantasy, power, and male hysteria" demonstrate how online communities construct "neo-realities" through avatar aesthetics and anti-feminist nostalgia, while Turkish-focused research examines embodied religious expression as political resistance. This dual focus positions him at the intersection of gender theory, religious studies, and digital radicalization research.
Collaborating with researchers including Hande Eslen-Ziya and Margunn Bjørnholt, Sousbois actively disseminates findings at major international forums such as the Nordic Conference on Violent Extremism (2024), European Geographies of Sexualities Conference (2024), and ESA Conference (2024), contributing critical perspectives on gender, religion, and online hate cultures.
