Oya Topçuoğlu is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Middle East and North African Languages Program at Northwestern University. She holds a PhD in Art and Archaeology of the Ancient Near East from the University of Chicago and a BA in Ottoman History from Boğaziçi University. Her work bridges Turkish language instruction with research on the archaeology and cultural history of the Middle East.

Dr. Topçuoğlu teaches courses on Turkish language, food culture, gender in popular media, and the political implications of archaeology in the modern Middle East. Her research focuses on how material culture reflects social identity, the impact of colonialism and nationalism on heritage, and the illicit antiquities trade in Iraq and Syria. She also explores how historical narratives shape contemporary national identities in Turkey.
She received the Associated Student Government Faculty & Administrator Honor Roll in 2018-19 and the Alumnae of Northwestern Grant for Curriculum Innovation in 2020. Her roles include Faculty Fellow at the International Studies Residential College and Board Member of the Keyman Modern Turkish Studies Program at the Buffett Institute.
