Sir Michael Owen is a Professor of Psychological Medicine and Director of the Institute of Psychological Medicine and Clinical Neurosciences at Cardiff University's School of Medicine. His roles include Deputy Head of the School of Medicine, Director of the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics, and past leadership positions such as Acting Dean and Deputy Pro Vice Chancellor for Research. He holds a PhD in Neuroscience and MB.ChB medical degree from Birmingham University.
His research focuses on psychiatric genetics, biological psychiatry, and neuroscience, particularly schizophrenia and neuropsychiatric disorders. Notable contributions include identifying genetic risk factors through genome-wide association studies and investigating synaptic pathways linked to mental illness. His work bridges clinical research with translational science, emphasizing genomic insights into psychiatric conditions.
