Owen Coggins is a Research Fellow in Music at the Department of Media, Humanities and the Arts within the School of Arts and Humanities at the University of Huddersfield. He is a member of the Centre for Research in Music and its Technologies. His work engages with interdisciplinary music studies, focusing on metal subgenres (black metal, drone metal), popular music analysis, and cultural critique.
Research interests include the intersection of music with literary imagination, environmental humanities, gender studies, and ironic cultural expressions. Notable projects include the Leverhulme International Professorship Scheme: Amplification Project (2025-2030), exploring music's transformative potential. His contributions align with UN Sustainable Development Goals through environmental and gender-focused studies.
Recent presentations include discussions on religious imagery in metal and political imaginaries in black metal. With an h-index of 26, his work spans 23 peer-reviewed outputs across journals like Green Letters and Journal of Popular Music Studies, and edited volumes by Routledge and Cambridge University Press.
