Dr. Owen Clarkin is an Assistant Professor in Biomedical Engineering at Dublin City University (DCU), affiliated with the School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering. He holds leadership roles including Chairperson of the Engineering Teaching Enhancement Committee, School Teaching Convenor, and Director of the Biomaterials Research Group. His academic journey includes a Materials Engineering degree from the University of Limerick (2005), a PhD in spinal orthopaedic biomaterials (2009), and postdoctoral research supported by an IRC Government of Ireland Fellowship (2012–2016). He transitioned to DCU in 2012, securing tenure through Enterprise Ireland grants and later receiving the DCU President’s Innovation Award (2017).
Research focuses on commercially viable biomaterials for cardiovascular, orthopaedic, and neurovascular applications, emphasizing injectable hydrogels, mechanical characterization, and cellular encapsulation. Key contributions include gallium-based hydrogel composites and coral-derived bone scaffolds. He leads interdisciplinary projects across Biodesign Europe, DCU’s Life Science Institute, and the Advanced Processing Technology Centre.
His publications span hydrogel optimization, bioactive coatings, and advanced manufacturing processes. Notable patents include gallium-based glass compositions (US, EU, Japan) and angioplasty balloon technologies. Teaching includes modules on surgical device design, clinical engineering, and materials science.
