Professor Owain Ap Gwilym is a Professor of Finance at Bangor Business School, Deputy Head of School, and leads the Credit Risk research group at the Institute of European Finance (IEF). He holds a PhD (Finance) and BSc (Management Science) from Swansea University. His research focuses on credit risk, European banking, financial technology, and sovereign credit ratings, with over 90 peer-reviewed articles published in top journals like Journal of Banking and Finance and European Financial Management. He has supervised 25 completed PhDs, many of whom hold academic positions globally.
Teaching responsibilities include postgraduate courses in Financial Technology, FinTech with Project, and Dissertation coordination. He collaborates with organizations such as CFA UK, Fitch Ratings, and Moody’s. His work has been profiled in the Financial Times and New York Times, and he ranks among the top 30 most prolific authors in mathematical finance (2019-2016).
Research interests span regulatory reforms’ impact on banks, liquidity in derivatives markets, and cross-border spillover effects of sovereign credit actions. He serves as an Associate Editor for the European Journal of Finance and has held external examination roles at over 20 UK universities. His contributions to financial stability and regulatory policy analysis are widely recognized in academic and industry circles.
