Edward Ott is a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland since 1979, previously holding professorships at Cornell University (1968-1979) and serving as an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow at Cambridge University (1967-1968). His work focuses on nonlinear dynamics, chaos theory, and their applications across disciplines.
Research Interests: Ott's scholarship spans plasma physics, chaos theory fundamentals, control of chaotic systems, critical phenomena in dynamical transitions, and emergent behaviors in large-scale complex systems. He pioneered the application of machine learning to nonlinear dynamics and developed foundational theories for weather prediction and kinematic dynamo modeling.
Awards:
- 2014 Julius Edgar Lilienfeld Prize
- 2016 Thompson-Reuters Citation Laureate
- 2017 Lewis Fry Richardson Medal
- 2017 Jürgen Moser Award
- Triple Fellow status (APS/IEEE/SIAM)
Professional Contributions: Ott's work on chaos control (with Grebogi & Yorke) revolutionized the field, enabling practical applications in engineering and meteorology. His research bridges theoretical physics with applied mathematics, influencing both academic and operational forecasting systems.
