Osman Balkan is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science and Associate Director of the Huntsman Program in International Studies & Business at the University of Pennsylvania. His work bridges political theory, migration studies, and cultural analysis. He holds a Senior Fellowship at the Lauder Institute of Management & International Studies.
His research focuses on global migration politics, race/ethnicity dynamics, identity formation, political violence, and collective memory, with transregional expertise in Western Europe and the Middle East. Key themes include necropolitics, mourning practices, and the interplay between state policies and migrant communities.
Balkan authored *Dying Abroad: The Political Afterlives of Migration in Europe* (2023), recognized with major awards from APSA and ISA. His writing appears in journals like *Comparative Studies of South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East* and public platforms like *The Immanent Frame*. Research funding includes grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and DAAD.
He co-founded APSA’s Political Ethnography Working Group and serves on the Executive Council of APSA’s Migration & Citizenship Section. Previously, he taught at Cornell University and Swarthmore College, and directed U.S. State Department language programs in Turkey.
