Erol Balkan is a Professor of Economics at Hamilton College, where he has been teaching since 1987. His research focuses on the formation of middle classes through education and financial liberalization in developing countries, with a particular emphasis on Turkey. He has also taught as a visiting professor at Sabanci University and Bilkent University in Turkey.

Balkan’s research interests span sustainable economic development, international finance, environmental economics, and the political economy of the Middle East. His work often integrates economic anthropology and globalization studies, analyzing phenomena like Islamic capital, hyper-competition in education, and refugee crises.
His publications over the past three decades reveal trends in financial liberalization, middle-class formation in Turkey, and the political economy of globalization. Notable themes include the interplay between neoliberal policies and social stratification, as well as the economic impacts of cultural and geopolitical factors.

Currently, he collaborates on the Refugees on the Move project funded by the Mellon Foundation.
