Oscar Vazquez is a Professor of Art History at the University of Illinois, with cross-departmental affiliations at the School of Art and Design, Latina/Latino Studies Department, Spanish and Portuguese Department, Unit for Criticism and Interpretive Theory, and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies. His academic work bridges art historiography, cultural representation, and pedagogical systems across Spain and Latin America.

Research spans two centuries of visual culture, focusing on:
- Art collection systems and patronage networks
- State-driven art historiography
- US Latino/a spatial construction through murals/graffiti
