Oriane Calligaro is a Lecturer in Political Science at ESPOL (School of Political Studies), part of the Catholic University of Lille. She concurrently serves as a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe (Bruges), Associate Researcher at CEVIPOL (Université libre de Bruxelles), and member of the steering committee for Politique européenne journal.
Her academic foundation includes a PhD from the European University Institute in Florence, where she worked as a research assistant at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies.
Calligaro specializes in the cultural and symbolic dimensions of European governance, with core expertise in European identity construction, cultural policy mechanisms, and anti-discrimination frameworks. Her work critically examines how civil society organizations and private foundations shape EU policy through non-material instruments like symbolic distinctions and value discourses.
Analysis of her publication trends reveals consistent focus on visual and symbolic aspects of European integration, spanning historical institutional studies (e.g., Council of Europe's cultural policies), contemporary value governance challenges, and emerging anti-discrimination fields constructed through philanthropic foundations. The trajectory shows increasing attention to visual representation and non-state actor influence in EU legitimacy-building.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Alexander van Humboldt Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship
At ESPOL, Calligaro supervises undergraduate and graduate theses in European politics while contributing to curriculum development in multilevel governance. Her research has received targeted funding through the Humboldt Fellowship and institutional support from CEVIPOL for collaborative projects on European civil society.
She actively participates in CEVIPOL's research network at ULB and contributes to ESPOL-Lab's initiatives at Catholic University of Lille, focusing on empirical studies of European identity formation and cultural policy implementation.
