Dr. Mickaël Orantin is a CNRS Research Fellow affiliated with LARCA (Laboratoire de Recherche sur les Cultures Anglophones) and Centre de Recherches Historiques (EHESS). His work focuses on the indigenous populations of the Spanish Empire, particularly the Jesuit missions of Paraguay (17th-18th centuries), using colonial Guarani documents to de-exoticize historiographical essentializations.
Academic Background:
- Master's in Anthropology (2017) at IHEAL under Capucine Boidin
- PhD in Anthropology (2022) at IHEAL supervised by Capucine Boidin and Denis Merklen
- Guarani language training at INALCO (2017-2018)
His research integrates historical demography, ethnographic lexicography, and material culture analysis to examine indigenous family permanence rates, labor structures, and kinship dynamics within Jesuit missions. Current projects include database creation for 18th-century colonial censuses and participation in ANR TOPURBI (2023) at EHESS.
Publications demonstrate interdisciplinary engagement across anthropology, linguistics, and religious studies, with methodological innovations in analyzing bilingual sources. Collaborations with Joaquín Ruiz Zubizarettta and Jean-Paul Zuñiga highlight his team-based research approach.
